
ROSIE GARLAND writes novels, short fiction, poetry, and sings with post-punk band The March Violets. With a passion for language nurtured by public libraries, her award-winning work has appeared in the Guardian, Mslexia, Best British Short Stories, Butcher’s Dog, New Welsh Reader and elsewhere. The Times has described her writing as “a delight: playful and exuberant”.
She is author of four novels: The Palace of Curiosities (HarperCollins 2013 – winner of the Mslexia Novel Competition), Vixen (Borough Press 2014) and The Night Brother (Borough Press 2017). Her latest novel, The Fates (Quercus 2024), is a retelling of the Greek myth of the Fates.
She has received writing commissions from Bronte Parsonage Museum and Tate Modern as well as nominations for the Pushcart and Forward Prizes. Poetry collection What Girls Do in the Dark (Nine Arches Press) was shortlisted for the Polari Prize 2021. She has recently seen the publication of her first collection of short fiction, Your Sons and Your Daughters are Beyond (Fly on the Wall Press 2025).
In 2023, she was made Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Val McDermid has named her one of the most compelling LGBT+ writers in the UK today.
An experienced workshop facilitator, she is also an experienced creative writing mentor (for National Centre for Writing, New Writing South, Word Space, Out on the Page, etc). She is committed to giving honest, thorough, well-balanced and constructive feedback. This focuses on suggestions and questions rather than definitive statements, exploring strategies to overcome issues and building skills, strengths and confidence.
